JobTrail’s origins trace back to a successful in-house program led by WorkPac. The program came about after WorkPac Founder Phil Smart noted success in recruiting many Australians of many cultural backgrounds, but felt there was no meaningful representation of Indigenous employees across WorkPac’s projects. This bothered Phil and the WorkPac Senior management team.

In 2015, Phil and the WorkPac team sat down with his long-term friend Albert Bowie, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander man, and asked the question “How do we increase our investment and contribution to Indigenous employment and training in Australia?”.

By late 2020, JobTrail had far exceeded expectations and established itself as a successful initiative in the Indigenous economy. With over 20,000 Indigenous careers developed through the JobTrail system, JobTrail had created a safe and empowering environment for aspiring Indigenous people.

In late 2020, JobTrail was approached by two successful Indigenous entrepreneurs, Warren Mundine and James Carroll. Upon hearing of the success of JobTrail within WorkPac, the duo suggested incorporating the JobTrail program as a self-sustaining independent Indigenous business. Today, JobTrail has 60% Indigenous in-house workforce driving the business, with 650+ Indigenous employees currently placed across Australia.
